Alex Zevin was awarded a travel scholarship to present a poster at the 8th annual Algae Biomass Summit in San Diego on September 29-October 2. His poster focuses on microbial community interactions between heterotrophic bacteria in Synechocystis communties.
Congratulations to Devyn Fajardo-Williams on being this year's recipient of the Phoenix/Scottsdale Groundwater Contamination Graduate Fellowship. The fellowship is awarded annually through the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering to an environmental engineering graduate student with a strong commitment to solving environmental problems in Arizona. Congrats Devyn!
It's a busy week for SCEB members. Some members are attending Battelle's Ninth International Conference on Remediation of Chlorinated and Recalcitrant Compounds in Monterey, CA. Check back for highlights!
The Swette Center for Environmental Biotechnology announced that Annika Faucon, Denton Holzer and Sanya Mehta have been awarded the 2014-2015 Swette Undergraduate Sustainability Internships. The internships allow junior and seniors in science and engineering to participate in established research projects. These projects encourage sustainable solutions to societal issues through scientific advancements. Annika will be working with the photobioenergy team to explore microbial communities in photobioreactors. Denton's research will focus on understanding hydrolysismechanisms, which plays a critical role in wastewater applications. Sanya will be researching bioremediation using membrane biofilm reactors (MBfRs). The interns will start their research this summer.
Congratulations to Emily Bondank for being awarded a Fulton Undergraduate Research Initiative (FURI) scholarship for Fall 2014. Emily works with Dr. Anca Delgado and Devyn Fajardo-Williams to research bioremediation using dechlorinating bacteria. The FURI program encourages undergraduate students to expand their engineering experience through hands on experience through research.
